Today, Google announced an exciting plan to build several demonstration networks that will provide consumers 1 Gbps broadband Internet service. This announcement will spur innovation not only by app developers, but will help create a new field of Internet service providers that will create and sell new high-speed consumer services over the project.

Google’s project will show the benefits of the open access model, where the owner of the network offers third parties the ability to provide services over their infrastructure. Additionally, Google will operate its network on a neutral basis, embracing net neutrality as an operating principle.

Markham Erickson, Executive Director of the Open Internet Coalition, stated: “Ultrafast and open broadband will not only provide a new and exciting platform for the next generation of Internet services and apps, but will hopefully inject new life into the extinct third party ISP marketplace.”

Erickson added: “We hope this will serve as an example to other network operators that the open model should not be feared, but should be emulated. Profit and openness are mistakenly seen to be in conflict; in fact we believe they are synergistic and amplifying.”
